My wife and I watch the Forged in Fire show as much as we can. The other day they had an episode with the blacksmiths building hatchets. I decided to play a little bit and came up with this design.

It is not made out of good material yet. You can hold it in 3 different places. It actually feels and works really good.

Any comments or feedback? Any thoughts on what I should make it out of in the end? I do have some D2.

1095 steel, holds an edge and will always come back if you sharpen it with love. In my experience at least. But, D2 if you have it, will blow old 1095 out of the water :spit:

Gonna make wood or micarta handles?

Wonder how a piece of A2 tool steel or O1 tool steel would work if you hardened it? We make some parts here out of those 2 materials, some we send out for case hardening and some we do ourselves with a torch, a fire brick and oil or air depending on if it's A or O. You got me wanting to make one now, lol.

Maybe some dimples for your fingers in the handle above were the blade is. I have one made by Browning similar to your design and I love it. I is light and works good to skin and cut/break bones on animals. Ill see if I can find a pic of it.

Rick maybe you could make a new pair of sheep shears for Mike I'm sure his are way worn out. Or are they still brand new because he likes the wool cushion for the pushin.

That show about making the hatchets was great. 19 y/o against the 69 y/o. Very impressive how cool and confident the older man was, and how the kid took the criticism of his hatchet and changed it for the better. Sucked that the kid didnt design a recurve into his weapon at the end. Would've been cool to see how that thing worked.

Rick, thats a pretty cool hatchet/cleaver you made.
