just recently bought a 2002 duramax reg cab long bed and was wondering what the list of parts I would need to get in order to swap the Allison transmission out for either a zf6 or a nv4500/nv5600? thanks in advance

Yes. Zf doesn't make parts certain parts for them. Alot of them atleast such as shafts, rear cases etc. I was gonna put a nv4500 but was in a time pinch and got this trans for 500 lol

What more is involved in the nv4500 swap? From searching older posts there is an issue with a clutch fitting in the bell housing?

Idk to be honest. Gm has a nv bellhousing but its for a smaller clutch I believe then the dodge. I was call Kenny's pull parts and have him build you an adapter cover. Prolly need custom shafts and a custom cross member

I'll give them a call, I'm still up in the air on doing the swap or not, but I don't want to do it and be stuck with not being able to find parts if and when something breaks if I do the zf.

How do you like yours over the Allison for pulling? Are you stock turbo still or did you step up?

Ok, I'm thinking of doing the swap now before I get 100% up and running, and I know spooling will be easier. Big thing pushing me is I have somebody wanting to buy my built auto

Did some more research on this...the adaptor plate Kenny's quoted me about $650, then $2800 for the triple disc clutch. Truthfully that's less than I thought for the adapter.

My next question would be for the hydraulics and pedal I'm assuming I would need factory gm parts and adapt the linkage over to the nv? Or do I need to use different hydraulics?

Sorry to knock the dust off this old thread, but exploring my options for manual transmissions for my duramax project. Zf6 is unfortunately out of the question as they are getting hard to find and if you do find one, they're high dollar.

I can find the nv5600 and g56 trans all day long..

What did you end up doing for your adapter plate kjp800?

i was set on buying a cummins and swapping the g56 with a nv5600 but my buddy is pushing 600rwhp and cant keep the trans from killing 6th gear when towing (not even hammering on it). he also blew 4th gear racing. the ZFs seems stronger compared to the NVs, least based on the amount of cummins guys i see having issued with their NV trans. the G56 is even weaker than the NV due to the aluminum case. id stay away from it

Well, the project truck I've got now has an nv4500 in it. Nv4500s and I don't get along too well, as while I had that version of transmission in my old cummins dually, I broke about ten of them.. It got expensive rebuilding them after I'd go out and play a little and pop! Something would break.

I had a g56 in my 08 6.7 cummins, I really liked it but the "gear roll" drove me nuts.. Did an auto swap, it broke, then threw in another nv4500, but didn't like the gear split between 3 and 4th gears, so found an nv5600 and threw it in. It held 630hp just fine, but trying to shift that thing fast, hahaha yeah right! I had better luck with the g56, and I've found a couple that are better priced than what I've seen the zf's go for. Don't get me wrong, if I find a zf that's affordable I'd jump all over it... It's just easier to find the dodge stuff than the GM stuff as they were more rare..

On a side note, speaking of a zf, how well do the ford zf's hold up?
