I'm about to get an 09 GMC from my dad and I'm looking to lightly tune it it will be a daily driver. I've tweeked on my 13 gas burner a little with good results and I'm looking forward to the diesel tuning. I'll be doing a lot of lurking here.

If you are doing it yourself then it should be doable. But you will not likely find a professional turner anymore.

I don't wanna roast tires off of it or smoke people out. Just looking for a little better shifts and throttle response, maybe fuel mileage. I think I can dig enough info up to manage that.

It's all here in the forum. May take a little digging and a ton of reading but you'll find what you need

Stock tcm tuning will yield the best shifts, making sure your fuel system is running 100% from the tank to exiting the injectors is key. Changing the allison have 'firm' shifts will only shorten friction life.

So no firm shifts with the Allison? I guess that makes sense with the torque of the diesel opposed to the gas engine.
I gotta get the truck first. It's in Alabama, I'm in Florida. It's either a lot of traveling on my behalf or we split the difference and meet halfway. It may be a month or so if I gotta make the whole drive.

Hard shifts on an Allison means shortened life which is also an indication of bad tuning or mechanical issue. Shifts should be nearly unnoticeable

I’m new to diesels and have no experience in tuning or the need to tune. I had a 2013 Silverado 5.3 and towed a fair amount between campers, sled trailers and boats. I can tell you it’s a world of difference with a diesel. Empty I got 26.7 mpg on the same trip I’ve done many times and got 18 mpg at best with the gas truck. As 2004LB7 mentioned, shifts are barely noticeable.
Drive the truck for a while and see whether you need to spend the money on a tune. BTW, my truck is all stock.
