Default Subwoofer Capacitor

Not really truck related but still automotive related.

In my toy hauler, i installed a 10" Pyle tube style sub that contains its own amp. this one here

https://www.amazon.com/PYLE-PLTAB10-...0%22+subwoofer

yes this thing isnt anything spectacular, i just need some base in the trailer when i crank the tunes up or am watching a movie with the fam. it works good till you go too high volume wise and it starts cutting out.

Issue is the power wire ran back to the subs location is WAY too small. It voltage drops like a mofo when you try to crank it up any. Simple thing is to run a larger wire, right? yyyeeeaaaahhhh that is by no mean going to be simple.

So i had the idea of using a capacitor on the back of the sub to charge up and let the sub run off that when i crank it for a song or two. Will that work or will the sub drain them rather quick?

Unless you get a rather large capacitor that’s hella expensive, it’s not going to help a whole lot. Capacitors in car audio are generally just used for bursts of energy when your amp needs it and your alternator can’t keep up for short periods. You could try it tho. It might work decent since it’s not a super high powered system. I’d still get something no less than 10 farad. The higher the better

Just run a bigger wire and be done with. My white truck has 0 awg wiring. Barely has any dimming with the volume cranked up on a 1000w rms sub/amp. Bigger alternator helps too, although I'm running the stock alternator.

its not that easy or id have done it When these MFG run all the wiring, its all done prior to the walls going up. Genesis does it some other sneaky way through the roof as well and you cant run it through the walls (they are solid walls). The sub is up above the head unit above the dinette. id have to somehow get the wire from the batteries (at the very front of the trailer), through the wall or roof, over the door and down into the cabinet the sub is on. about 20 or more feet of wire is my guess.

if the capacitor wont work, ill have to figure out a way to mount it under the stairs but that kills my plan for putting a winch under there for the sand car.

Had a similar issue on a trailer a while back. I had a 12v gel motorcycle battery sitting around and put it next to the amp, problem solved. A capacitor is for huge discharges and fast recharges, not for a sustained load.

Put a battery by it. Capacitor probably won’t work.

Thatís a good idea. Put a little battery box up there and Iíll get some UPC batteries from my brother. That should work!
