Engine Oil Cooler DIY
It's been several months in planning and sourcing but I've finally completed my oil temp weapon :happy2::happy2:


Parts List which I filled from Summit Racing for $740:

FLD-DB30618 Fluidyne Oil Cooler
EAR-503ERL Sandwich Oil Adapter with Thermostat (modded by Super Diesel)
EAR-585112ERL Adapter Fitting -12AN (pair)
MRG-F12012 -12 AN 120* Fitting (Qty 3)
RUS-613190 -12 AN 90* Fitting (Qty 1)
MRG-R2512 -12 AN Rubber Hose (25' but only required 10')

The top of the cooler mounted nicely to the frame using 3/4" square aluminum tubing bolted through factory holes. Just be careful to center the cooler with the line fittings installed, there is only 1/2" of clearance. I fashioned the top air dam from black plastic lawn edging.


The grill actually has to go in first. I used expanded aluminum about 27" x 9" and mounted it with the factory plastic fasteners. Super simple, cheap and it looks Nice, Really Nice! :D


The bottom cooler mounts went through a couple revisions but the end result was 1/2 aluminum tubing bent 90*.

The bottom air dam was more lawn edging.


Be very careful installing the drain plug, the aluminum one I bought decided to gall like a bastard just test fitting it finger tight. I had to chase the threads and clean it all up, then went with a brass plug.

The side air dams were painstaking; I hot-glued doorskin/cardboard templates in place then duplicated the pattern in .030" aluminum.


The lines are header wrapped where they pass under the manifold and to insulate them individually. You need more than 50' of 1" if you want to do them entirely. I recorded the lengths somewhere :confused:


Super Diesel ported the sandwich adapter for full flow, thanks Michael! There is nothing less than -12 AN in the entire route. :thumb:

Very clean write up and install! Way to go and thanks for the info and pics Sir. This is coming along nicely. Lets see some more of these.

Also, for those using the factory GM lower valence that lives in hotter climates, you may need to slit it open some on the bottom and top for increased air flow to the cooler. GM didn't give us much to work with there and zilch on some of the chevs. The LMLs Have a nice big opening to work with.

Do you have any type of aftermarket oil temp gauge or are you relying solely on the cluster to tell some sort of change?

Think he has a oil temp gauge Matt. Although oil pressure can tell how hot the oil is getting... :D

Just curious on the use of the adapter. I already have the remote bypass Oil Filtration from Amsoil. Would it be possible to tap off the output of the Amsoil adapter and run it through the Oil Cooler before it passes through the oil filters?

I'm modding them for folks. The way it comes there is not enough flow through it to supply at the higher RPMs. I double the flow through it to insure oil starvation is never a problem there. They come from www.summitracing.com .P/N: EAR-503ERL. Some folks just ship them straight to me and I send it to them fixed up.
