Default Steering Gear Box

Just a question for anyone who has done a gasket change on the steering gear box?

Is this a simple thing to do? The way that I understand it, it requires a bushing to be replaced as well.

Does anybody have a DIY on this so i can save some money as I am about 500 miles over my Ext. Warranty...kinda pisses me off cause the dang thing was losing fluid well over 2,000 miles ago, but couldn't get it in then. Not sure if they will be nice enough to honor going over the miles, being I have put those 50,000 miles on in a year and a half. That is what I get for not paying close enough attention to the miles.

wow......the one and only time that you have given me useful advice!!! LOL

j/k

That is what I thought. $450 was the quote from the stealership...parts and labor. Maybe the mechanic would do it on the side for a little less.

I don't know what the new box is like, but I hear the "old style" screw gears are not fun to mess with. I almost attempted it on my 70 Impala once upon a time.

Any other input is appreciated!

just to be sure is it the gasket that is on top of the box under the aluminum cover with 4 bolts and the pitman shaft nut?

thanks for the input guys....

here is what is going to happen:

it will be covered under warranty...plus that DAMN (ac/heater) fan speed problem that will happen again since GM won't put in the good one that is available worldwide. Hopefully they will diagnose and fix another problem correctly that they said they fixed incorrectly, which is unrelated to this topic.

However, I only have about 4,000 more miles on my warranty...then I am on my own. This is all good information to know. I have heard that PSC steering gear boxes are the way to go; however, I have not found one on the internet for 05 and above. Everything is 04 and under with the HDs.

If anybody has info, like a link to a page that has one, I would sure be interested in knowing just in case.
