Ok. with 3 feet of extensions and a big breaker bar I was able to get the converter bolts out and all but the bottom two bell housing bolts. And as far as I can tell all electrical and plumbing connections are disconnected.

So, any tips or last minute advice? I know I need to support the front of the trans and someone else said to tryn keep pushing the converter back so it doesn't fall out.

ALso, I can't find a good spot on the passenger side rear of the engine to lift from. The threaded hole in the head is blocked by the up pipe. Is it ok to lift from the driver rear and passenger front only?

Thanks for helping and putting up with the 1000 noob questions...

Usually the converter will stay on the input shaft when pulling the engine. As long as your supporting the engine I don't see why not to use those holes. I used a 4 point leveler on my engine when it came out and went back in

The tc bolts needed a breaker bar, were they that tight? Could you remove the heatsheild on the uppipeto gain access the the ps rear head holes? An engine leveler is a good idea. I might go pick one up in the next couple of days

Also I jack up the trans and put a 1.5 square tube from torsion bar to torsion bar to set the bell housing on. Works great, I think I've actually used a 2x4 before. And x2, always good to be cautious but that tc most likely ain't goin nowhere

When you say turn the engine clockwise, is that looking at the engine from the front? What happens if you turn it ccw?

You can turn it either way. But it would be clockwise if you were standing in front of the truck looking at the motor.

A load leveler would have been awesome! It was a royal pita, but of I had either removed the turbo or hacked the cab up 2-3 inches it wouldnt't have been that bad.
My diesel mech has the engine now, ps head is off and it looks like cylinder no 7 is at least one of the culprits. Driver side comes off tomorrow.

Yes the tc bolts were that tight, but looks like they had lock tight. I under up using several wratchet straps to pull the engine cause I didn't have a load leveler. While it did work, it was still a pita. I think I could have removed the heat shield, but since I'm putting PPE manis and ups on I just hooked one of the wratchet straps to the mani/bracket.

Thanks for everyone's help!

So, what else should I be doing while the engine is out... Other than the HG's with arp's of course, water pump, glow plugs, and what else am I forgetting?

Why are you doing a water pump and glow plugs?

Because I don't know if it's been done and it's got 198K, and I had 3 glow plug faults prior to pulling the motor.

Any issue with lifting the motor and transmission out as a single unit if you dont have a cab in the way?

Nothing wrong with that but it is heavy and cumbersome. a forklift or loader will be your friend obviously.

I planned on pulling it into the shop to use the overhead crane. Not sure on attachment points, but at least one around the tail of the transmission and other on the heads, or something like that.
