Might've had something to do with GM's Dexos2 requirements, too.

They stripped zinc and phosphourus out of the oil(the impact additives that allow oil to act as a barrier) to help with emission equipment life primarily. They also made changes to it to supposedly extend the drain intervals, but some changes to it are supposed to reduce hot oil pressure. Ford has not approved many ck-4 formulations, and is still selling cj-4 oil under the motorcraft brand. It's a similiar change to the one that occurred in 06 to s rated oils for gas engines, and it was largely attributed to rapid valve train wear and wiped out cam lobes in non roller motor engines.

Time to stock up on Lucas Magnum HD

Although I was lucky enough to find some of the "older" Delvac hiding in the back shelf at Rural King last week.

The Dmax is VERY easy on oil compared to Ford or Dodge. Yes, the phos & zinc are now <1000ppm but that is more important for the Ford Powerstroke. Ford now has many CK4 spec'd oils on their "approved" list. If you want to learn more about lubricants, you should check out BITOG.com...

As Ferm basically said, more recent oil specs are geared towards emissions junk. The 2010 TDI jetta my wife had required an 'ESP' oil that cost more than the 10qts of Delvac1 5w40 for my truck, but for half the oil!

Last I seen the ck-4 spec had it at 800/830 for zinc and phosphourus, same as the 06+ s rated oils. Cj-4 was 1200/1260 I believe for zinc and phosphourus, and prior to cj-4 in 06 it was 1400. I know Ford has shown quite a bit of concern over the ck-4 spec, but I haven't seen anything from GM and Cummins so far about it. You can also buy a bottle of zddp additive to add to your oil(lucas and comp cam both make one). I just used the last of my cj-4, and I'm not looking forward to buying oil for my next change. If I had known sooner, I would have bought a few cases of 15w40 at sams last year when it was on sale.

If you are worried about it, there are still some legacy CI-4, CI-4 plus oils still out there. Mobil delvac MX 15w40 is one, I'm thinking about giving it a whirl on my LML for my next oil change.
