Nice... I don't stick weld enough to remember it all but the basics anymore needed and I have to dig in books for that project. I have found an all position very versatile high-strength rods that I really like that does not fall into this identification system. I get it from a company called IBS and it is called Vinculum Hi-Alloy. I have used it for truck frame and machine boom and bucket repairs, I have noticed that a bare weld doesn't rust.

How will a 7014 work for general purpose on mild steel?

Not sure but we use 7018 for almost everything over here as long as you heat up 4140 prior to weld it sticks good

I remember the first time I ever stick welded. I was 10 years old and my dad had (still has) a Lincoln AC welder we call the buzz box. I said how close do I put the rod? He said close as you can get it without it sticking, lol. I been welding ever since. Got a Miller Bobcat and do it on the side after my job in a machine shop some. Now I am running a 3 axis milling machine and do all our welding. Mostly mig, some stick and some tig. Love the ole stick welding though. Mainly use 6013, 7014 & 7018. Recently made a gooseneck hitch for the dmax. Here's the thread.
