Default LLY P1093 Shim Mod Instructions:

First I'd like to thank Tim at Midwest, and &^%$, as well as *&&^%$, and #@$%^ too for all their help. Some of the helpers wish to remain anonymous as they are waiting for a bowl of soup.

I was going to do a deluxe tutorial, but time didn't allow it. This is the best I can do for today. Sorry.

You will need:

20x1.5 metric nut (20mm fine thread metric)
4mm washers (9.0-8.0 OD) that will make a stack that is .75mm thick
fuel line removal tool
18mm 6pt wrench or socket
Vise and some aluminum strips, or softjaw vise.
crescent wrench

First you need to remove your Pressure Relief Valve from the driver's side fuel rail in the rear. It is an 18mm hex head that was tightened by the hand of God. You may need an impact wrench to remove it, or worse case, remove the entire rail. You will have to remove the glow plug controller and a fuel line or two to give you enough room.

Once you have removed it, you will need to disassemble it. This is where the vise and 20mm nut come in:

You put the valve in a vice with the 18mm hex pointed up, and the 20mm nut threaded onto the body threads. If the vice has steel jaws, use a couple of brass or aluminum shims to grip it. You will grip it on the GRAY needle housing, not the gold spring housing.

Turn the 20mm nut clockwise and it will pull the valve apart.

Now you will put the shims into the bottom of the gold spring housing.

Replace the spring and put the housing/spring back on the needle valve housing.

The needle housing and spring housing are swaged together, so you will not be able to reassemble with your hands completely, for this you use the vise:

i'd like to add one bit here. i learned this by having to do it twice. the valve has 5 pieces all total. the housing (gold piece) the spring, the gray valve(which contains 2 more pieces) a plate with 3 holes and the actual valve needle. when disassembling the grey piece be careful not to lose the needle. it is very tiny and if it falls out you will literally be looking for a needle in a hay stack. i wish i took pics to give you a visual. i would assume with out this needle the pressure will just bleed off as this is what seals the valve.

if some one has one laying around willing to take pics that would be great. dont ask why i know this info

I made that tutorial in just a few minutes while getting ready for a race. It would really be nice if someone who is doing another shim mod would do a more professional version.

Does it matter if the washers are galavinized or aluminum? Also are there any tolerances +/- on the .75 mm?

Pat says they are usually steel and you want to end up with approx. .75

well Im glad I asked then I thought the total height of the washer combined was to be around .75mm saved me from having to do it twice.

Edited my post. He did misunderstand me. Yes, combined should be .75 thick. I would lean more to the plus side then the minus side.

It's actually dimpled in 3 places and when you disassemble it, it can expand the end where it is dimpled so what I did to hold it all together untill I got it back in is I re-dimpled the same three spots with a small punch before removing it from the vice-just to ensure I wouldn't be looking for pieces later!!

When you turn up the HP on a LLY, it will often throw a P1093 engine code, and go into reduced power mode, limiting you to 2000rpm.

It's caused by the PRV popping off it's seat and draining the rail. This even happened on stock LLY, but rarely. It always happened after you passed 450rwhp.

For LBZ/LMM, I wouldn't worry much about it. Do it for insurance if racing, but otherwise most trucks won't have a problem at 500rwhp.
